The Americas and Caribbean: Guatemala

Village Health Banks - Project HOPE’s VHB programme in Guatemala promotes better health, more secure livelihoods, and an overall better quality of life for impoverished women and their families in the Department of San Marcos, Guatemala. This programme now serves more than 3,000 women and their families in a sustainable manner.

Timeline
1976 Project HOPE responds to the earthquake with needed humanitarian assistance, and stays in the country building the Ministry of Health capacity.
1985 Project HOPE shifts from building the technical capacity of Ministry of Health staff to helping improve the direct care given to rural populations.
1997 Project HOPE initiates a Child Survival programme in the Boca Costa region to improve care provided to residents and migrant workers.
1999 Project HOPE begins a Village Health Bank programme in the San Marcos region to strengthen the services offered to women in the region.
2000 Project HOPE starts work with the ILO to provide health education as part of the Child Labour Eradication effort in the Boca Costa region.
2001 Project HOPE helps establish the ProRedes Salud project to improve the capacity of local networks of health oriented NGOs; new agreement is signed to extend Child Survival activities and expand into new areas of Boca Costa region.
2005 In response to Hurricane Stan, Project HOPE sent approximately £2 million in GIK to help restore the healthcare system.
  Today, 2009 Project HOPE’s work continues in Guatemala.................
