Diabetes Education - Project HOPE has developed a comprehensive diabetes patient education course called 5 Steps to Self-Care, a 12-part workshop series providing patients with the knowledge, skills and encouragement to improve their diabetes control, and to peer counsel others with diabetes or who are at-risk. In addition HOPE has launched a complementary professional training component, called Lend a Hand to Self-Care. Now Project HOPE is supporting a local NGO to launch a Diabetes Education and Prevention Centre, with the aim of establishing permanent community infrastructure for providing on going low-cost, high quality education and care services.

Regional HIV/AIDS Education and Training Centre - Located in Mexico City, the Centre combines classroom and hands-on learning in field sites selected as models of excellence. The aim is to strengthen both the clinical and educational skills of trainees to provide higher quality care to clients as well as training for colleagues upon returning to their home institutions.

Timeline
1999 Project HOPE begins HIV/AIDS education programmes in marginalized areas of the Mexico City metropolitan area.
2001 Project HOPE-Mexico participates in a regional assessment of HIV/AIDS activities in Central America and, as a result, begins offering training workshops to countries throughout the region, including Honduras and El Salvador.
2003 Project HOPE developed a comprehensive patient education course called 5 Steps to Self-Care, a 12-part workshop series providing patients with the knowledge, skills and encouragement to improve their diabetes control, and to peer counsel others with diabetes or who are at-risk; HOPE inaugurated a Centre for HIV/AIDS Education Prevention (CEPVIDA) in a local university clinic, providing student doctors, nurses and psychologists performing mandatory social service an opportunity to accompany HOPE in weekly workshops and outreach events in the community and thereby gain vital professional experience.
