Africa: Namibia

TB - Since April 2008, Project HOPE Namibia has extended its programme reach to combating the challenges the country is facing with Tuberculosis. Through a community-based approach, Project HOPE is working hand-in-hand with the MOHSS in Oshana and Oshikoto Regions to strengthen the linkages between the community members, TB patients, the clinics and hospitals. The focus is on detection and prevention, treatment follow-up, and treatment completion.

Economic Empowerment as a Means to Mitigate HIV/AIDS among Young Women - Caprivi and Kavango are among Namibia’s most HIV-affected regions and among the poorest in Namibia. Since 2007, Project HOPE has provided microcredit loans along with risk-reduction education in a capacity building environment to vulnerable young women in the region.

Orphan and Vulnerable Children (OVC) Expansion to Vulnerable Caregivers - Project HOPE’s 2006 survey of OVC caretakers in Oshana and Omusati regions found 54 percent of the caretakers were 60 years of age or older. As many of these elderly caregivers, as well as junior heads of household were not participating in Project HOPE’s micro-credit programme, a more concentrated and targeted effort to reach these vulnerable populations was developed. Through a combination of skills building, scholarships, apprenticeships, and targeted business opportunities, Project HOPE is providing young and older heads of households with economic strengthening opportunities to generate improved incomes and financial resources.

Sustainable Strengthening of Families of OVC Project - This five year project uses Project HOPE’s Village Health Bank methodology to provide economic sustainability and services to households with orphans and vulnerable children (OVC). Project HOPE is providing small loans to individuals, targeting health and life skills education to OVC, their families and staff and volunteers of community and faith-based organisations and developing, expanding and linking a network of local partners who provide services to OVC and their families.
