Paediatic oncology palliative care , Shanghai

Virgin Atlantic Airways, In-flight "Change for Children Appeal" supports

paediatric oncology palliative care programme in Shanghai.

We were thrilled when we were selected to receive funds from the Virgin Atlantic “Change for Children” appeal. The money is being used by our team at the Shanghai Children’s Medical Centre in China to provide palliative care training to care providers for up to 4,000 children (in the first year) who have been diagnosed with terminal cancer.

This initiative saves the children from multiple injections of treatment to an in-line catheter.  These funds will also provide counselling and support services for the families and carers of those terminally ill children, helping them to make the final period of their children’s lives as comfortable and happy as possible.

Although Shanghai Children’s Medical Centre is a unique facility and provides first class treatment for these very sick children, the support of Virgin Atlantic’s “Change for Children” is also helping to develop new ways of caring for young patients and setting trends to influence paediatric hospitals throughout China.

Ellie Higgins, who gained the support of Virgin Atlantic Airways said: "we want to create a family environment in a section of the Oncology unit to provide privacy for the children and their families, which is hoped will enhance the lives of those children whose treatment has failed. The visits of Virgin Atlantic’s staff from the Shanghai office have been a tremendous boost, especially their desire to help fulfil some of the children’s last wishes."
