Project HOPE UK’s three country programme – Nicaragua, Guatemala and Peru

Poor women in Latin America represent a marginalised group.  Millions of them are unable to claim basic human rights to fully participate in the economic life of the community; to access health knowledge and services; and to live free from domestic violence.  In 2006, with funding from the Department For International Development, Project HOPE UK began implementing a three year project to create and support an integrated “Women’s Economic, Health, and Rights (WEHR) Project” (health, credit, and anti-domestic violence components) in Nicaragua, Guatemala, and Peru.  The aim of this project is to help over 7,500 women in these three Latin American countries to organise themselves into self-managing Women’s Economic, Health and Rights (WEHR) groups for the purpose of empowering themselves by increasing their understanding of, and  ability to, access these rights.  The project, which will be carried out with local partners in each country is based on a tested and successful methodology currently being implemented by Project HOPE and local partners in Honduras.
