INSPIRATION
In 2007 I was introduced to the Project HOPE UK team (PH) and learnt about the work they do in developing countries across the world. I was so inspired by their projects and the impact they have on people’s lives I felt compelled to add my contribution. So with the support of the PH team and my employers I committed to one year's voluntary work with PH.
ACROSS THE GLOBE
My year will take me to two continents facing some of the world's most severe health care challenges: Africa and Asia. Focusing on a variety of projects I will work with three different teams in South Africa, Thailand and China.
AFRICA
My journey begins in Eastern Africa where I will visit some of the areas worst affected by the AIDS Pandemic before starting work in Johannesburg, South Africa.
During my time here I will be working in the HIV/AIDS clinics based in townships areas around Johannesburg. In the clinics I will support the medical team and gain an insight into the disease, its impact on the local communities and the key challenges that face those working here.
THAILAND
My next placement is in Chiang Mai, Northern Thailand. In Chiang Mai I will be working with the Project Directors and utilising my marketing skills to help develop and implement their cervical cancer and HIV awareness programmes across the country.
CHINA
My final project takes me to Shanghai. During my placement I will be working with the paediatric oncology unit at Shanghai Children’s Medical Centre to enhance the newly received Virgin Atlantic funded programme for palliative care training.
